Last Saturday I was typing while sitting on the lounge with my daughter who’s 7. She asked me to read her a few lines from what I was working on. I told her it was an adult book but I could find her something. She then asked me if I could write something that she could read. This is what we wrote together. Enjoy.
One day there was a dolphin in my pool.
I wasn’t sure how she got there, but one morning I came downstairs and there splashing in the water was the sleek pale grey animal.
I asked my mum, but she couldn’t see anything.
“It must just be your imagination.”
But it wasn’t.
Just then a rainbow unicorn flew over the house, and I asked my Mum if she saw it but she said
“Unicorns aren’t real.”
Then on the way to school I saw a giant chicken trying to cross the road.
I told Dad to be careful, but he just laughed and asked me “Why was it trying to cross the road?”
At school I asked my teacher why there was a rabbit under her desk.
She looked under it and shrugged, “I can’t see a rabbit.”
I told her about the dolphin, and the unicorn and the giant chicken, and that no one else could see them.
She smiled at me and said, “Just because no one else can see them, it doesn’t mean they aren’t real.”
When I sat down at my desk, I patted my lap and the rabbit hopped up. I stroked its silky fur and waved at the dragon that was waiting outside the door.
Come on over and friend me on Facebook at Lisa Lancaster.
